VIGO PARK CEMETERY
Swisher County, Texas
Vigo Park Cemetery is located twenty-three miles north-east of Tulia, Texas on FM highway 146. The Cemetery is located one mile west and one mile north of Vigo Park.
Mrs. Bessie C. Hall was the first person buried at this cemetery.
Charles Gardner and J. C. Stitt rode around on their horses to locate a most likely place for it. There are a lot of tin markers that do not have names on them.
Although it has been assumed that J. C. Stitt was buried in the Vigo Park Cemetery, he was actually buried in Marlow, Oklahoma in 1933. This information was furnished by Norma Stitt Finch, granddaughter of Joseph C. Stitt:
“I visited Vigo Park several years ago, met Robert Gardner – he took us to the Vigo Park cemetery; found the plot that shows J.C. Stitt and a Stitt child buried in the Lot 6. It was apparently an assumption that he ‘probably’ was buried there. He is actually buried in Marlow, OK died in 1933. As far as I know there is a child either stillborn or that died shortly after birth in the second grave. The Stitt family moved from Vigo Park moving to Colorado in the early 20’s and then to Oklahoma sometime before early 1930’s. Joseph and second wife Myrtle are both buried in Marlow. She died in the mid ’60’s. I found that he married his second wife in Wise Co TX in 1912. The Stitt and Gardner families moved from Vigo and Park Counties Indiana. My grandmother died before 1910; she wasn’t on the 1910 Swisher Co census. I believe she is buried at the Catholic cemetery in Nazareth. (My dad was Frank Stitt the eldest of 5).”
